Italy’s Trabocchi Restaurants

Our local coastline, known as Italy’s Trabocchi Coast, is quite unique because of the special fishing docks along its shores. Many of which have been transformed into elegant restaurants!

So just imagine this scenario. A beautiful day, warm and sunny. A romantic 40th anniversary dinner for two. That was the special gift some dear friends of ours, Massimo and Magdalena, gave us for our anniversary!

With the added gift of enjoying it in their company, along with other great friends! Not that we actually went on our anniversary, as it’s much too cold to eat on the water in November!

Abruzzo’s Trabocchi, or elevated fishing docks, project out over the turquoise sea much like giant insects on tall legs.

All of the trabocchi are still used for fishing. And each dock is comprised of at least one elevated platform, supported by trestles (or piles) anchored in the rock or sand. Long arms greatly resembling antennae extend from the platforms to support the trabocchetto or fish traps. These traps, made of fine mesh net and connected by winches, are what traps the fish as they are raised up, like a giant sieve.

Many of these amazing structures, still used for fishing, have also been turned into elegant restaurants! A beautiful blend of the practical and the romantic!

The trabocco we were on, Punta Cavalluccio (or Sea Horse Point), has a fantastic seafood menu, all fresh and exquisitely prepared. The service was elegant, with attentive waiters. And even the tableware was beautiful and unique!

Seeing these structures as we drive along the seacoast, they intrigued us, as they do most. So it was fascinating to say the least, to dine on one, and see the fishing nets, and even where they they prepare the food! And of course, everywhere we turned, were signs of the sea and fishing. Even the transparent floor window looking down into the crystal clear water!

Trabocchi dining truly is a special and romantic experience. Almost magical, I’d say!

We are so grateful for this special time in such a beautiful place, made even better by the presence of dear and special friends! We pray that the Lord will richly bless our dear friends for their generosity, which they lavish on everyone!!

And we really wish that you could all visit our special trabocchi!

  1. Congratulations on 40 years of marriage! I am glad that God blessed you with dear friends who cared enough to treat you to such a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing all the great photos.
I don’t like spending a lot of money on a meal in a restaurant (I just don’t think that I can eat enough to warrant the cost!) so I have often planned romantic picnics, either on our beautiful waterfront or even in a candlelit room in our home, to celebrate our special days.

  2. How thoughtful of your friends! I can see why you wanted to dine there. I’m glad your wish came true. Like the Bible says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

    1. So true, Belle! We never expected to be able to do so, and actually felt a bit guilty over someone spending that much on us. But then decided to accept it with love and gratitude toward our friends and our loving Father!
